Dos and Don'ts for the Self Pass Rule

When teaching the self-pass rule to my team, are there any tips in terms of when to hit and when to carry, depending on the situation?

It comes down to quick decision making and identifying these visual cues.

If they are outnumbered and going to carry the ball into pressure and risk losing possession, then it is best to wait and get support from the team to move the ball around and into space.

If they can spot available space to move into or can confidently eliminate the nearest oppostion player then definately encourage them to self pass and keep posession. The self pass can also be used effectively to stop the opposition getting into a good position to defend e.g.

if your team has a 16y free hit, encourage your full backs to take a quick self pass (if it is low risk option) as the opposition are still retreating and before they have got into a position to press around the ball. Challenge the team by asking what the best option is for a vareity of scenarios whilst in training/small sided games.

Couldn't agree more Shelley. I think that it's always useful to put in a rule with your players that the first thought is to take the self pass, so that the team is always looking to move on quickly. If the self pass isn't on, then at least everyone is ready...
